Millennia ago a people -- the Hohokam, which means "the Vanished" -- built irrigation canals in Scottsdale that were still useful enough to sustain improvements in 1868. That’s remarkable. In 1937 Frank Lloyd Wright chose the area for his Taliesin West, his community at the “foot of the ‘ McDowell Mountains.” In the 21st century, Scottsdale is huge, because it's adjacent to Phoenix and Tempe. There's even an annual State of the City speech given each year by the Mayor, the first one delivered in 1988 by Mayor Drinkwater.
